I often get asked if there are such things as easy weight loss tips, and if so, do they really work. The answer is I guess “Yes” and “no” at the same time. You see, losing weight can be easy or it can be hard – a lot depends on how you prepare yourself mentally for the challenge ahead. I can give you a whole list of easy weight loss tips to help get your started losing some excess weight, but nothing will really work if you aren’t well prepared.

Every battle weary general knows that you must have a battle plan. Great battle plans are designed around knowledge of the enemy. In your case the enemy is excess body fat and how it got onto your body. We know that food, metabolism and your lifestyle habits are the ingredients that go into gaining excess body weight, and so you will be using these factors when designing your body plan.

To know your enemy, keep a “food diary”. A food diary is like a journal of writings that describe what types of food, how much of each food, when you ate the food and how you were feeling. This information will be used to know your enemy better so that you can make a weight loss plan that will allow you to conquer the enemy (excess body fat). The food diary will contain at least 2 months worth of daily descriptions of the foods (every morsel you at) contained in meals and snacks for each day of the two-month period. You will not only record the type of food and amount of the food that you at, but when you ate it, and how you were feeling at the time. Were you angry, upset, anxious, nervous, scared, or hungry? Yourself, a dietician, your doctor, or nutritionist or fitness coach or whomever you may use to help you lose weight can use this diary.

Don’t you just hate diets that restrict you from eating the foods that you love? Here is a simple way of fighting the temptation enemy:

Let us say that the enemy is chocolate candy, and you really love to eat candy so much so that you can’t stop yourself from eating one piece after another. In order to make sure that this type of enemy is not going to totally ruin any chance of you winning the battle against excess body fat you can do these things to prepare yourself for this particular battle:

  • Indulge in one piece after you have had a normal portioned meal. This way you will be full and the one piece will be more likely to satisfy your hunger for chocolate
  • Another tactic would be to serve you 1/2 of the normal serving size. If a candy bar comes in two pieces, eat one today and the other piece tomorrow
  • A great strategy for fighting the candy or sweets enemy is to drink a full glass of water every time you feel that strong urge to have a piece of candy or other goodie that is not on your diet. Water works wonders for filling your stomach and making you feel fuller, those less likely to overindulge in the sweet

Physical activity is a wonderful arsenal to have on your side as you fight the excessive fat enemy. If you feel the urge to overeat, try getting up from the table and doing a physical activity such as going for a walk, or do a household chore, or toss a football with someone in order to separate you from food and get your mind off of eating by being physically active.

Use your freezer as another tool to help you fight your enemy. Let us say that you are having a family gathering or other type of entertainment at your home where food is either prepared by you, catered or guests bring food to your home. After the event you have tons of food left over. In order to fight your enemy you will need to either:

  • Give departing guests heaps of left over food to take home with them
  • Freeze food items and bring them out to eat a little at a time
  • Give food to a neighborhood food bank/pantry/drive
